Mining For Pics

Been busy. Synopsis writing—have I mentioned how much I hate writing a fucking synopsis? And querying. I hate the query process. There was also a little thing called Christmas. Next is New Year’s, followed immediately by CES. I hate CES, too, but that’s another story.

Anyhoo, I’ve been mining my photo library for good pics. Wait, let me rephrase that: I’ve been looking for images I’ve previously rejected that can be made cool because I know a lot more about editing photos than I did back when I took them*.

If you follow me on Instagram, you’ve already seen most of them, but I wanted to post some slightly higher res versions here. You can see much larger versions by clicking on any given photo.

First up is a buffalo in Yosemite. 2005, I think. Or maybe 2006. This beast was marching down the road like he owned it, which he probably did. I wasn’t arguing. I got a few shots of him coming towards the car, but I was stoked when I got this shot less than two meters away.

Move over rover, or I will fuck you up.

Pretty cool, right? I always liked the shot, but hated the way it looked, if that makes sense. At least until I went back to it. Related: a hat tip to Jeff Gamet for everything he’s taught me about Photoshop over the years.

While we’re in Yellowstone, there was this hotspring:

Some hotsprings in Yellowstone. I don't recall which one, but it was a noted touristy stop.

Hold on, I think I’ll post that one to Instagram, too.

And just think, all that thermal energy is just a reminder that Yellowstone is going to go BOOM! Any time now.

Right! On to others.

In Western Colorado, I got a couple of shots looking out over the valley West of Grand Junction. I think we’re (that’s my now-ex, Darla, standing in the pic) in the Colorado National Monument.

Western Colorado.
Western Colorado.

And then this one, a little further through the Monument:

The U.S. is a beautiful country.

And so is Vietnam, though in massively different ways. I had an amazing trip there in 2002. This was taken on the streets of Ho Chi Minh City Hanoi (I was just reminded which city we were actually in), just as the Communist government was first opening the country up to limited capitalism. It was a curious mix of entrepreneurism and total government control, but it was fascinating.

I wish I had taken a lot more photographs, but it was 2002 and storage was a thing back then. Sadly, few of the pics I did take are worth showing, and I can not for the life of me find one entire set that includes one of my all-time favorite pics.

But I do like this street shot.

Ho Chi Minh City in the summer of 2002.
Hanoi in the summer of 2002.

So, Happy New Year, and thanks for hanging out during the last year.
