John Edwards Growing Some Cojones?

When the hell did John Edwards grow a pair of balls? During an interview with Wolf Blitzer on CNN Wednesday, Mr. Edwards said that President Bush has been using Al Qaeda being in Iraq as the excuse for everything he has done (though he didn’t mention that Al Qaeda was not in Iraq until Saddam was ousted, but that’s another issue), including the war itself, "Guantanamo," "torture," and "illegal spying on Americans."

Those last three items are things the American people and the Democratic party have largely been shamefully silent on (I used different terminology when discussing this with Darla). For a presidential candidate to be finally willing to take on those issues makes me stand up and say "Huzzah!"

Huzzah!

Listening to him speak, it’s obvious that he’s gained some strength since the 2004 election, and that’s also a good thing. He also addressed the criticisms of his US$400 haircuts from Republican Mitt Romney by saying, "Governor, we ought to be talking about what we’re going to do about men and women dying in Iraq, not this kind of silliness."

Huzzah!

The Latest Bill O’Reilly & Fox News Lie

The most recent lie from the crazy whack job known as Bill O’Reilly and his employer, Fox News, is almost too much to believe. During a recent O’Reilly Factor broadcast, these un-American pigs labeled Republican congressman Mark Foley a Democrat during a report about Mr. Foley exchanging sexually suggestive IMs with a 16 year old male former page. Mr. Foley is, of course, a Republican, the party for whom Fox News and O’Reilly work so hard to spread propaganda.

Fortunately, John Amato at CrooksAndLiars.com got a screen shot — you know, for posterity. My good friend Greg Snyder suggested we all help spread it far and wide for people to seem, and I think that’s a fine idea. Accordingly:

Life, It Seems, is Indeed Good

Listening to The Church’s excellent cover of "Cortez the Killer" — what a great song, and what a great cover — and it occurs to me that life is indeed good. I have an amazing woman that loves me, great friends, a great job that affords me absurd flexibility, a wonderful dog who’s greying faster than his pop, and (good) little things like great music to listen to and Battlestar Galactica to watch.

With the assault on America being lead by the Bush administration and the Repbulican party, the destruction of our environment, religious zealots from many faiths trying to enslave us all in their preferred theocracy, and even (bad) little things like wanky people to get us irritated…Sometimes it’s good to stop a moment from dwelling on all the negative things around us in order to take stock of the good things in our lives.

Today, The Church helped me do that, and for that I say thanks. This post may come off as cheesy, but it’s quite heartfelt.

Bill Clinton WTFPWNS Fox News & Chris Wallace

Bill Clinton has what no other national Democrat seems to have, and that’s backbone. He demonstrated that on September 24th, 2006, when he opened a can of whoop-ass on Fox News Sunday host Chris Wallace, indicting both Mr. Wallace and Fox News in the process. Oh, go ahead and throw the neocons in the WTFPWNage, too.

Ken Olbermann? Where have you been all my life? Peter Cohen sent me a note this morning saying, "Keith Olbermann is a fucking ninja rockstar superhero," along with a link to commentary from Mr. Olbermann broadcast on MSNBC.

I fear I wasn’t familiar with Mr. Olbermann before this, but Peter is so right…

Defending Democracy With Tyranny

Is there hope for our country? For our democracy? For our freedom and civil liberties? I become more concerned about these issues daily, as the Bush administration does its best to destroy the foundations of our civilization and ruin any and all of our credibility throughout the world.

I am guessing I’ll be writing about these subjects often through the remaining 29 months of Bush’s reign of terror over the U.S., but what has me riled up today is the idea of using torture in the process of "defending freedom." I refer to the secret detainment facilities we operate somewhere in eastern Europe, as well as the torture in Guantanamo Bay and Abu-Gharib, and who knows where else.

Let’s start this post out with a quick question: Are you against gay marriage? If you are, but you limit your "against" to disapproval, or even blanket condemnation, I’ll fight and die for your right to have those opinions, no matter how strongly I disagree (or agree) with them.

If, however, you want to legally ban gay marriage based on your own backwards religious beliefs, I posit that you’re an un-American ignoramus whose values threaten the very fabric of the United States of America. If you are of that persuasion, however, you can at least be confident that you are surrounded by million of other idiots who don’t understand what freedom means or what what civil liberties are.

The Poker Players Alliance

I joined the Poker Players Alliance today. This is a lobbying group looking to protect our rights as poker players, and to promote poker as a game of skill that should be regulated and taxed, not banned. The PPA has the support of a number of big name players, including Howard Lederer, Jesus Ferguson, Linda Johnson, Greg Raymer, and a host of others.

Join the organization today if you want to see this sport continue to grow and thrive, and to combat the forces of big government and the religious right that want take away Internet poker.

On a similar note, I noticed that the Alliance is holding a fund-raising rally (link requires a PR Newswire account) at the Rio Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas on July 28th, 2006. Contact the PPA for more information, as the rally has not yet been added to the organization’s Web site.

The Bush administration has stupefyingly arrested David Carruthers, the British subject who is CEO of BetOnSports.com, a British-based publicly traded online casino. The charges are racketeering, conspiracy and fraud related to doing business with U.S.-based customers. Perhaps it’s a thank you to British Prime Minister Tony Blair for sticking by the U.S. in its disastrous execution of the "War on Terror."

Poker Politics & “Conservatives”

By way of introduction to my brand spanking new (8-month old) blog, I will blast some chuckleheads who fancy themselves "conservatives."

This past weekend, I interviewed with Ricky Spero for The Context Machine portion the TMO Weekly Round up (iTunes Link).

The Weekly Roundup is a weekly podcast recapping the week’s Apple and related-tech news. It’s great for you folks looking to catch up on everything in one great-sounding podcast. The Context Machine (a name I LOVE) is an analysis segment where Ricky brings on TMO editors to dissect the news, to give it more context, and to offer our opinions on what it means.

This particular show, we talked most about the recent house bill that attempts to stop online poker, while protecting online horse betting and online lotteries. In addition to this bill being hypocritical, pointless, and un-American, it’s real intent is not to stop online gambling (never mind that poker is a game of skill), but rather to be a handy wedge issue for the upcoming midterm elections in the States. It’s pandering to the fundamentalist Christians who don’t get that they’re merely the other side of the Taliban coin.
